Everything keeps going, but I'm running on empty: when success comes at your own expense

Successful women who flourish on paper but are constantly switched on. On the fine line between performing and running yourself into the ground.

Everything keeps going, but I'm running on empty: when success comes at your own expense Recently we spoke with an inspiring woman: 45 years old, Amsterdam region, top position, beautiful family. The conversation was touching. An impressive CV, infectious enthusiasm and inspiring words. But also a recognisable story.

After many personal conversations with this target group, we recognise a common thread: successful women, powerful leaders and smart entrepreneurs who flourish on paper don't always express that they are constantly switched on and becoming exhausted. They give too much to others too often and forget themselves.

The numbers don't lie
According to research by Harvard Business Review, more than 50% of female leaders experience chronic stress or fatigue. Women over 40 are also often in perimenopause, a life phase where energy, mood and cognitive sharpness fluctuate. Data from TNO shows that women between 35 and 55 have the highest burnout rates in the Netherlands.

Yet we keep going. Out of a sense of responsibility, loyalty, willpower. We think it comes with the territory.

Living on strength versus living in your flow
Living on strength costs energy. Living in your own flow gives energy. Sometimes growth means taking a step back to take two steps forward. It means rediscovering who you are now, taking your cycle and boundaries seriously, and learning to work from your own values and rhythm.

Growth and health go hand in hand
Because when you take good care of yourself, only then can you truly make a lasting impact — at home, at work and in our society.

FEM Business Club is here for female professionals who want to grow without running themselves into the ground. Precisely from strength, softness, vision and drive.
